Hartman Rock Garden

I left Clifftop a day earlier than usual – early Saturday afternoon rather than Sunday morning. Both for a very practical reason – showers were predicted – and because I was eager to see Ken again. I would be spending the next several days in Springfield OH doing the meet and greet with Ken’s relatives. Some of whom I’ve met in the past so it wasn’t as onerous as it sounds. Thus, I didn’t want to pack up wet and let things molder in the car before properly unpacking and putting them away. See – utterly logical.

Our suppers were completely booked through Thursday, but we had the days to ourselves. So we pulled out the ol’ Roadside America URL and looked up things to see around Springfield. One of the places was the Hartman Rock Garden. Even though this place had been around since before Ken was born (and he spent his teen years in Springfield), he had never heard of it. I suppose it isn’t really something teens are interested in, however.

This rock garden was built between 1932 and 1944 by Ben Hartman. He constructed “a variety of structures and figures, following the themes of history, religion, and patriotism.” It was quite delightful.

Here’s a slideshow showing some of the garden.
