Day 1–Tempe to Holbrook

We’re on our way. We left about 2pm after a busy morning of laundry and final cleanup. We decided to take a slightly longer route and detour through Show Low simply because Ken hadn’t gone that way before and it only added about a half hour more.

It was a pretty and scenic drive for the most part – even the old fire scars. There was a real big wildfire up near Heber about 10 years ago (I forget the name of it) and, while the grasses had come back, the pines really hadn’t reseeded much. Plenty of young cedar though.

We finally pulled into Holbrook about 6:20pm (231 miles in 4 hrs 16 min), checked into our hotel, and got some supper. At the recommendation of the hotel clerk, we went to Mesa Italiana Restaurant. It was pretty good and obviously popular. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We wanted to split an entrée and it was absolutely no problem. They split it in the kitchen and we even got an extra side salad for only $3 more. That left room for desert. I meant to take a picture of the meal but forgot. Oh well.

I had been in Holbrook in April 2005 and had done some sightseeing around town. Ken had also driven through in the past but only on I-40 so he hadn’t seen the Wigwam Motel. I made him drive by it and he got a good chuckle. Here are a couple of pictures I took back in ‘05.
